Maximum working hours, overtime, weekly rest and leave

Article 75 provides that workers must be allowed a weekly rest day.

Notes

Under Article 144, any employer who violates this provision shall be liable to pay a fine of between 2,000 and 5,000 Qatari Riyals.

Article 75. The worker shall be allowed of a weekly paid rest which shall not be less than twenty-four consecutive hours and Friday shall be the weekly rest day for all workers with the exception of the shift workers. If the circumstances of the work necessitate the employment of the worker during the rest day the worker shall be compensated for the rest day by another day, and shall be paid for working that day the wage payable to him for the ordinary weekly rest day or his basic wage plus an increase of not less than 150%.

With the exception of shift workers a worker shall not be required to work more than two consecutive Fridays.

Qatar Labour Law 2004 governs the terms of employment of the majority of workers working in Qatar. The Labour Law sets out the minimum entitlements of workers employed in Qatar, and as such, it contains a number of important protections for workers, prohibits child labour, prohibits recruiting foreign workers by or through unlicensed recruiters or agencies,bans recruitment agencies from charging recruitment fees, and provides for mechanisms to enforce its provisions.

Any stipulations contrary to the provisions of the Labour Law are void unless more advantageous to the employee.
